Guidance for New Tenants

  • Essential tools – Spade, fork, hoe, rake, trowel & watering can.
  • Short visits are better than long and infrequent visits
  • Neglected plots can be dealt with as follows:
  • Cut down weeds (which can be burnt) and long grass or you may prefer to spray all or part of the plot with Glyphosate (such as RoundUp) and leave to die back.
  • Cover ground with black garden fabric (no carpets allowed).
  • Mark out plot with paths and beds.
  • Dig and plant an initially plant an area manageable to you, hoeing regularly.
  • When under control, dig and plant another area.
  • Good starter plants are potatoes, runner beans, courgettes, marrows, sprouts, cabbage, sweetcorn and rhubarb.
