Woodley Town Council Sid Hopkins Six a side Tournament

 

Woodford Park Leisure Centre was the setting for another hard fought Sid Hopkins Trophy football tournament. Once again this day was blessed with blistering sunshine. It all kicked off at nine thirty Sunday morning with the under 7’s and under 8’s tournament.

 

In the under 7’s age group there were seven teams all playing each other. There was 1 Woodley Wanderers teams,  1 Woodley Saints team, 2 Woodley Kestrels teams 2 Woodley Hammers teams. The final team was a team brought together from subs and younger brothers called the Woodley All stars. In the under 8’s there were eight teams who also would play a round robin tournament. Entered teams were as follows:

  2. Woodley Town Kestrels Stars
  3. Woodley Saints Lions
  4. Woodley Hammers Black
  5. Woodley Town Kestrels Z
  6. Woodley Saints Tigers
  7. Woodley Town Kestrels X
  8. Woodley Saints Pumas

 

Abiding with F.A. rules the under 7’s and under 8’s tournaments are non competitive with everybody receiving a medal for their participation. There were some great games played in both age groups and all the participants and spectators alike enjoyed the morning of football. The under 7’s player of the tournament was Tom Mckintyre and the under 8’s player of the tournament was Ban Darcy Sawyer.

 

As the sun continued to blaze down on Woodford Park it was the turn of the U9’s and U10’s age groups who would each compete for the prestigious Sid Hopkins trophy.

 

The first games in the under 9’s league were close encounters with Woodley Hammers defeating Woodley Wanderers Stripes 1 goal to nil and the same score was recorded in the other match in this league with Woodley Town Kestrels scraping a 1-0 victory over Woodley Wanderers Stars. Woodley Town Kestrels would go on to be hard opposition for all the other teams and would finish up winners of the league stage closely followed by Woodley Wanderers stars.

Under 10’s

 

In the under tens age group there were two teams that dominated the whole league. It was these two teams that would eventually meet in the final to battle for the Sid Hopkins trophy. A close fought match saw Woodley Town Kestrels Stars run away winners with their opponents Woodley Town Kestrels White having to settle for the runners up spot.
